Case Study – Supporting eLife with their hire for an Email Marketing Specialist

eLife is a non-profit organisation inspired by research funders and led by scientists. Their mission is to help scientists accelerate discovery by operating a platform for research communication that encourages and recognises the most responsible behaviours in science.

eLife publishes important research in all areas of the life and biomedical sciences. The research is selected and evaluated by working scientists and is made freely available to all readers without delay. eLife also invests in innovation through open-source tool development to accelerate research communication and discovery.

Requirement

This was a new requirement for eLife and an additional role to the marketing team.

James visited the eLife offices and met with the HR Manager and Head of Communications to talk through the role profile, and challenges faced so far with the hire.

It was also a good opportunity for James to see the working environment and get a flavour for the office culture so that he could effectively brief candidates in the prequalification calls.

Living walls, bean bag laden creative spaces and happy colleagues is always good to talk about with first-hand experience.

Challenge

eLife were already in the middle of their recruitment campaign for the role at the point of engaging with Rosslyn David.

Having shortlisted candidates and held a round of interviews they had so far been unsuccessful in finding a candidate with the depth of email and CRM experience required.

Those that they had interviewed to date mostly had email experience as one part of a broader digital role, rather than a focus.

Solution

James ran a thorough project mapping the market specific to need.

Using outbound search methods, James held prequalification conversations with 17 prospective candidates before introducing a final shortlist of 2 candidates to the client.

From this shortlist, eLife progressed both candidates to interview, followed up with a subsequent offer and placement.

Key metrics for the recruitment requirements

Candidates introduced – 2

Candidates interviewed – 2

Candidates progressed to final interview – 2

This was the first project on which James and Rosslyn David partnered with eLife.

The success of the campaign opened the door to future recruitment partnerships for Marketing Executive and Content Marketers at eLife.
